Announcing Our Fall Production: IN THE MOUTH OF THE BEAST

Last week, we announced a group of named finalists whose submissions to our 2024 Myth Open Call stood out to our judging panel. This week, we’re excited to announce the winning playwright, whose piece will be produced as the final mainstage show of our 2024 Season.

2024 Myth Open Call Winner: Baylee Shlichtman, In the Mouth of the Beast

Father/daughter cave explorers Nel and Apa descend into "the Maw" on a risky expedition in search of a mysterious source of clean energy. Beneath the surface, the rational world fractures and the laws of physics melt away. Their dreamlike descent melds Ancient Greek drama, Taíno folklore, and cosmic horror into a crystalline truth: we are creatures of labor and suffering, and the plain sight of our destiny is the cruelest thing of all.

Baylee’s play is an extraordinary two-hander that loosely adapts Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis into a claustrophobic descent from the modern "rational" world into a deep dark battered by forces too immense to understand. Her engagement with the prompt and themes of our open call—myth as a connection both to our distant past and a more enchanted present stood out to our panel immediately, and we are thrilled to produce her play.

New Relic will stage In the Mouth of the Beast this October, and auditions are now open. More information, including dates and tickets, coming soon!
